Warning to Dog owners in Pirbright

Added at 14:00 on 13 December 2023

The Guildford Vet (https://www.theguildfordvet.co.uk/) have issed the following Important notice regarding Alabama Rot

We have had two cases of Alabama Rot or CRGV (Cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy) in the last month. We would like owners to be aware that it is likely that it is present in our area, North of Guildford in the Pirbright area. It is important to remember this is a very rare disease and the likelihood of a dog contracting the disease is very low.

Alabama Rot is a rare but potentially life threatening disease. It is characterised by ulcer-like lesions on the legs, swollen skin and dogs licking their paws more than usual. If the disease progresses, dogs can develop kidney disease which can manifest as vomiting and a change in behaviour such as not eating or being fatigued. Unfortunately, vets in the UK do not know the cause of the disease which means there is no specific treatment.

If you suspect that your dog has a lesion that matches these descriptions, please call us and arrange an appointment.

For more information, Anderson Moore’s are experienced in the treatment of this disease and have a very useful website you can visit (https://www.alabama-rot.co.uk/).
